I made it in! Woot! I'd intended to write earlier but I just didn't manage it.
This one... those of you who have read the comics know how this bit went down. It's different from the show version in a couple of notable ways but I'm not trying to spoil anyone who hasn't read the comics. I hope you like it anyway!

Shane pushed his hat back off of his forehead and rubbed his eyes. He should be paying better attention to the area around the camp but he felt his eyes drawn back to the tent over and over again. Rick was back. He should be happy but…
“Lori?” Reaching out, he touched her shoulder, feeling her body shake with quiet sobs. Wrapping his arms around her, he said “Lori, Carl finally fell asleep. I’m so sorry, Lori. I couldn’t save him.” She turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck and sobbing against his chest. “I can’t believe he’s gone!” Her words barely a whisper, choked out between sobs.
Shane, his own eyes filled with tears, just held her, let her cry. He felt her pain – Rick had been his best friend since high school. They’d done everything together, including joining the force. When Rick had married Lori, Shane was his best man. He’d been there when Carl was born, pacing the waiting room with Rick while Lori had been in surgery. He felt like a part of the family, always had. He knew it wasn’t the same really but he felt that he’d lost a brother.
“Lori,” he said, stroking her back, “I’m so sorry. I loved him too, you know that. If I could take it back, take his place, I would.” He cupped her face in his hands, wiping her tears from her eyes. She looked up at him and pressed her lips to his.
For a moment, Shane kissed her back. Then he pulled back, holding her at arm’s length. “Lori! What-“ She put her hands on either side of his neck, pulling him down to kiss her again. “Shane, it hurts so much. Please just… make the pain stop? Just for a while?”
Shane shook his head, bringing himself back to the present. He sighed and settled himself more comfortably into his chair, staring at the tent again. His best friend was back. Carl had his father back and Lori… she had her husband back. He should be happy…
He just couldn’t quite manage it.
